Rebekah McCain

about Rebekah

Rebekah McCain began playing the violin at the age of four using the Suzuki Method and studied under Chenyi Avsharian. She pursued music at Liberty University for her undergraduate studies and continued her education at Teachers College, Columbia University, with a focus on strings pedagogy and performance.

Rebekah has performed in a variety of settings, including fiddle festivals, orchestra concerts, chamber groups, and symphonies. She is also an experienced session musician and frequently collaborates with bands and recording studios. In addition to performing, Rebekah has been teaching violin for over a decade, sharing her expertise with students of all ages.

“I believe that every child has the ability to learn music, just as they learn language—through immersion, encouragement, and a nurturing environment. Inspired by the Suzuki Method, my teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of ear training, consistent practice, and a positive, supportive relationship between student, teacher, and parent. Music is not just about playing notes;it is about developing character, discipline, and a lifelong love for artistry. I focus on building strong foundational technique while fostering musical expression and confidence. Repetition and review are key to mastery, and I encourage students to approach learning with curiosity and joy. Above all, I believe in teaching the whole child—developing patience, perseverance, and appreciation for beauty through the study of violin. My goal is to create an encouraging and inspiring space where students can grow both as musicians and as individuals.”

What’s been the highlight of your professional career?
One of the biggest highlights of my musical career has been the opportunity to perform in so many different settings—whether it’s playing at fiddle festivals, in orchestras and chamber groups, or recording in the studio. I love the versatility of the violin and how it allows me to connect with different styles and musicians. But beyond performing, one of the most rewarding parts of my journey has been teaching. Seeing my students grow in confidence, develop their own love for music, and reach milestones in their playing is incredibly fulfilling. Being able to both perform and pass on what I’ve learned is something I truly cherish.

What type of student will excel best with you as his/her mentor?:

Students who will excel with me as their teacher are those who are curious, open to learning, and willing to put in consistent effort. I work best with students who enjoy a structured yet encouraging environment—who thrive with clear expectations, gentle guidance, and a focus on both technique and musicality.

Because my teaching is inspired by the Suzuki Method, students who are comfortable learning by ear, embracing repetition, and engaging in a gradual, step-by-step approach will find success. A strong support system, whether from a parent or self-motivation, is also key. I love working with students who are excited about music, eager to refine their skills, and open to constructive feedback. Most importantly, students who approach learning with patience and a growth mindset will flourish under my instruction.

What does being a “Mentor” mean to you and why are you excited to step into this role?:

Being a music mentor means more to me than just teaching notes and technique—it’s about guiding students on their musical journey, helping them develop confidence, discipline, and a lifelong love for music. I see mentorship as a way to not only shape skilled musicians but also to nurture qualities like perseverance, creativity, and self-expression.

I’m inspired by this role because I know firsthand the impact a dedicated teacher can have. My own mentors shaped my musicianship and instilled in me a deep appreciation for the violin. Now, I have the opportunity to do the same for my students. Seeing them grow, overcome challenges, and find joy in their playing is incredibly fulfilling. Music has the power to enrich lives, and being a mentor allows me to pass on that gift in a meaningful and lasting way.

What type of music did you grow up listening to? How did it influence your artistry?:

I grew up listening to a mix of classical, fiddle, and folk music, which shaped me into a well-rounded and expressive musician. Studying classical violin through the Suzuki Method gave me a strong technical foundation, while exposure to fiddle music introduced me to the joy of improvisation, rhythmic drive, and playing by ear. Folk music, with its storytelling and raw emotion, deepened my appreciation for music as a form of personal expression. This diverse musical background has had a huge impact on my artistry. It has made me adaptable, comfortable in both structured and free-form musical settings, and passionate about blending technical excellence with musicality. Whether I’m performing classical repertoire, playing in a band, or teaching students, I draw from these influences to create a rich and dynamic musical experience.
