Ashley Willits

about Ashley

Ashley Willits’ voice has been described as sensual, thrilling, poetic and incredibly versatile! “Her gift reaches deep into the heart and impacts the soul.” As a dramatic lyric soprano, her skills transcend across opera, musical theatre, gospel and jazz. Her intuitive musical interpretations are in gratitude to many years as a classical pianist. From this foundation in piano stemmed performances as an opera and musical theatre singer, choir director, and choral arranger.
She is currently a doctoral candidate at The University of Mobile in Alabama and set to graduate in spring of 2027. She holds two masters degrees
one in music with an emphasis in classical and contemporary voice from San Jose State University and one in music education from Santa Clara University. Prior to graduate school, she attended the University of California, Santa Barbara where she studied Opera and Communication. Ashley is currently a vocal and choral director in Nashville, Tennessee. Internationally, Ashley placed top 5 in Popular Voice and top 10 in Classical Voice for New York’s music competition, Music International Grand Prix (MIGP). She earned 1st place in the MIGP San Francisco Semifinals in Classical and Popular Voice. At the Cal-Western Regional Finals she placed 1st in Classical Voice and 2nd in Musical Theatre Voice. She won the Edwin Barlow Post-Collegiate Award at NATS and 1st place in Advanced Classical Voice. This year she debuted singing at Carnegie Hall in New York. This summer she was selected to perform at the International Lyric Academy in Italy cast as 1st Lady in Mozart’s, Marriage of Figaro.

Inspiring students to be the creators and molders of their work is my core teaching philosophy. While conducting and accompanying choirs, I always encourage students to direct, conduct, sing solos, and accompany on the piano. Rather than hire professionals in the community, putting leadership roles into students’ hands reigns most important. When students take ownership over their work to perform at concerts, an incredible confidence evolves as well as positive self-efficacy. I teach by first demonstrating the technique appropriate for the genre of music, by singing and playing on the piano classical, contemporary, sacred, and secular works. Creating a safe space in the classroom to permit self-expression and ownership of work evolves when I smile, am gentle in my communication and express a sense of humor. The environment is relaxed, yet never intimidating, as inviting and encouraging words are communicated amongst students. All learning modalities are implemented in the classroom kinesthetic, auditory, visual and analytical. In order to discover rhythm, meter, and phrasing students are invited to move through pieces with the goal of feeling the song in their bodies. Through auditory learning, students are listening to me play piano and sing to give proper performance techniques. Students also listen to one another play and sing when encouraged to lead through their voices or various instruments. Visually, students are sight-reading music in various key signatures, time signatures, and rhythms. The ergonomics of the room encourage community connection, to encourage eye contact and active listening to one another for timbre blend. Analytically, students are inspired to close their eyes, and reflect on the music to find personal meaning and connection.
