About
Ben Boddy is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer originally from the suburbs of Chicago. Ben grew up in a family of all musicians, with many members being music teachers, most notably his mother who teaches choir and music theory. He started learning guitar at the age of 8 with hopes of playing guitar in a church worship setting. From sixth grade through high school he was heavily involved with his church’s worship ministries primarily as an electric guitarist. His love of jazz and classical music developed in this time as well, sparking interest in music theory and composition.
Ben made his way to Nashville in 2020 to study classical upright bass performance at Belmont University. During his time there he developed a love for the city, as well as the incredible music community there. After getting some professional opportunities in the music industry in music production, composition, and songwriting, he made the decision to move to Nashville officially.
Throughout his musical career, he has had the privilege of working with many amazing musicians such as: Vertical Worship, Paul Baloche, Tauren Wells, and many more. He also is playing a part in the composition of the hit show, “The Chosen”.
Ben’s Teaching Philosophy: “Music is a very exciting thing for me and have found a deep, deep love for it. I aim to find what makes the student excited and really ROPE that in and dwell there. There’s nothing worse than being told to practice some scales and chords if you have no idea what the potential outcome can be. I show what the possibilities are with the things you are taught which inevitably gives substance to what we are learning. Practicing should be FUN and Exciting!”
Q+A
What’s been the highlight of your professional career — like your biggest spotlight moment to date?
“Working alongside the guys in Vertical Worship was always incredible, not necessarily a single spotlight, but over a few years I had the privilege to write guitar parts, and play with them live all the time; it shaped who I am as a musician and as a person tremendously.”
Why are you passionate about teaching?
“I absolutely love seeing my students light up with excitement when they learn something new or discover something they want to learn next. It’s inspiring for me as well to see that, and I love helping inspire the next generation of musicians.”
Are you touring/recording/writing for anyone now?
“I produce for a small church in the Gold Coast of Australia, called Kingdom church and have been for over a year. In addition, I have been co-writing and producing many songs for my younger sister, Grace. Our first single comes out in September with a full album in March!”
What’s your favorite local spot to spend time at?
“The Well! Great coffee and great atmosphere for getting work done, but they also host writer’s rounds and local performances too!”
What is your go-to Karaoke song choice?
“I Want It That Way by the Backstreet Boys. If we are friends I will even throw in the choreography.”
